Monte Michener

A Colorado artist working in Estes Park, at the edge of Rocky Mountain National Park — across painting, torn-paper collage, and reclaimed-wood assemblage.

Artist Statement

“I get excited about the reuse of materials. Most of my work is a process of rediscovering a new use for a material that may be considered scrap or clutter.”

The Ethos

Rusty, chipped, weathered by the elements, fires, floods and other natural events — these create a patina and an opportunity for something new.

My job, as an artist, is to see that opportunity and create. What one person discards as clutter carries a history — a surface that can’t be manufactured. I let that history stay visible in the finished piece.

The work moves between mediums but shares one instinct — to find the subject inside the material.
